Some years ago I decided to try for my amateur (ham) radio license. I can remember being very young and sitting in my uncle's library, listening to him talking on his radio to people all over the world. He would tell me about people that he had made friends with in countries I hadn't even heard of before and then show me where they were on a map. I was fascinated. I knew then that someday I'd like to do that too.
Over the years other things took precedence...a job, a family and finally the opportunity presented itself and I was able to take a class locally. I worked hard and amazingly passed both exams the first time!
Today I use my amateur radio for many things. As a hobby, it's a wonderful way to meet new people from around the world. But the majority of my time on the is spent working with the SKYWARN operations here in St. Louis County.
